Описание

Schoenberg & Reger

Opis:

Review The cover is Kokoschka s portrait of Schoenberg about to mop his brow. Listening to opus 40 and Reger s stupendous opus 73 - each a veritable extra-cryptic-crossword-puzzle of a composition - it seems suitable enough. Equally cleverly providing a perfect intermezzo , the less cerebral Benedictus, arguably Reger s most beautiful organ piece, offers respite. First performed in 1944 in New York, the recitative theme is the composer s own invention and develops along tonal lines, albeit chromatic and convoluted, from a brooding D minor through various key centres, dynamics and tempi, now menacing, now tortuous, lyrical, frantic, skittish, tranquil...to the culminating fugue, likewise wide-ranging, only just making it home with tierce de Picardie on D. No middle-period serial techniques here why did Schoenberg revert for an organ piece? Just one of many thought-provoking aspects of this work. (Another random thought it provoked was: should one try playing [ Highlights From ?] Schoenberg s Variations after Sunday service? If not, why not? Well, it is not necessarily religious...nor easy-listening!)The vast Princeton organ, after many additions since 1928, was well-restored by Manders in 1991 and now facilitates Schoenberg s own detailed registrations, formulated with this Skinner instrument in mind.Reger s giant Op.73, often described as the most difficult organ piece ever, lasts more than twice as long. A stunning conclusion. Even more of the comprehensive palette is displayed here and Martin Souter proves a flawless exponent of these truly monumental works. As much food for thought here as there is enjoyment. But, at any rate, be amazed! --Organists' Review Product Description Arnold Schoenberg's Variations on a Recitative were first published in 1943 in an edition which gave very detailed performance instructions based on the 1928 Skinner organ in Princeton University Chapel. A restoration of this organ has made it possible to reconstruct the intentions of this edition, and this recording therefore brings the forensic practices of early music to the 1940s. In addition, there are two amazing pieces by Max Reger. The 'Benedictus' provides a perfect foil to Schoenberg's monumental work and it is followed by Reger's own monumental piece, the 'Introduction, Variations and Fugue'.
