GCSE and Standard Grade examinations have fostered a more meaningful approach to language learning through topics relating to real life sit¬uations. Few 15-year olds, however, get excited at the idea of learning to buy train tickets or a pound of potatoes.
The transactional dimension is also paved with potential pitfalls. These often include:
- rote learning of standard phrases
- cue card overkill
- neglecting some of the other skills through over-emphasis on roleplay
- students’ inability to transfer knowledge and skills.
A fresh look is therefore needed with clear objectives in mind. The practical tips contained in this booklet focus essentially on:
- bringing more variety into classroom practice to sustain motivation
- contributing to development in all skill areas
- facilitating a mixed-skill approach
- facilitating transfer of knowledge and skills
- contributing to better exam preparation and success.
Although the emphasis is on the 14—16 age range, many of the ideas in this booklet can be used or slightly adapted for use with younger students. The star system denotes the ability level to which the activity is aimed, and activities are classed for their suitability for groups, pairs or individual work.

When foreign language learning appears tantamount to climbing up a greasy pole, there are problems in store for students... and teachers. These are exacerbated when students with two to three years of language learn¬ing behind them feel they have achieved nothing.
The reasons for underachievement and poor motivation can be manifold:
- lack of confidence
- concern about the exam
- unclear about subject structure
- subject matter too hard/easy/babyish
- unstimulating subject matter
- lack of interest in the subject/the country
- having to ‘speak foreign’
- lack of skills awareness
Suitable remedies too need to be explored from many angles, and differ¬ent solutions work with different individuals. Is the student who claims to dislike foreigners truly biased against the country or merely demotivated by lack of progress in the language?
The practical tips contained in this booklet focus essentially on achieving lower GCSE grades but also include advice on getting nearer to middle grades. They seek to generate a more positive attitude — and therefore a greater degree of success — among students, by rethinking both content and skills.

Underachievement is one of the issues which dominate the educational agenda. One feature which is rarely discussed is that it can occur at all levels of the ability range, and whatever the level of motivation. Among the more able (who are the focus of this booklet) many teachers will recognise these two typical underachievers:
- the motivated student who has reached a plateau and appears unable to make further progress towards achieving ‘that extra grade’
- the reluctant student whose mediocre performance contrasts sharply with motivation and achievements in other subject areas. Although one is more motivated than the other, those two students may have more in common than one might imagine. Some of the key reasons for underachievement appear to be:
- lack of awareness of course objectives and exam requirements
- lack of interest in subject content
- focus on quantity at the expense of quality
- lack of awareness of the nature of language
- work pitched at the wrong level
- lack of intellectual stimulation
- poor learning, revision and examination skills
- lack of‘innate’ interest in modern languages. In the main, curricula and examination syllabuses provide teachers and students with the course ingredients. This booklet focuses on how to use those vital ingredients so as to produce the best possible outcome, both in terms of personal and intellectual development and examination results. The booklet looks at:
- how to enhance the classroom experience for greater motivation and success
- how to integrate exam preparation effectively into the learning process.(ze wstępu)
