The need to establish armed security for the direct protection of Very Important Persons (VIPs), who represent the state, is inseparably linked with the emergence of the institution of authority itself. The heads of state, members of their families, and people associated with the apparatus of power, were and are exposed to attacks both from their own country and from abroad. Their life and health are threatened by political adversaries, mentally unstable people and those who could make an attempt on someone's life just for publicity. The targets remain the same, with only the attack techniques changing.

The observation and analysis of the attempts on the life and health of VIPs over the centuries shows that such deeds will also be committed in future, which forces the creation of armed services and their constant professionalization as regards the organiza-tion and methodology of operations. These units are established regardless of the political system and the source of the legitimization of power. Despite past experience and the recognition of risk areas it is not possible to entirely prevent all threats. The assassi-nations of contemporary politicians and their prede-cessors are a testimony to this.
