This is a DVD transfer of the original 1950's Time documentary of the WW2 conflict in the Pacific. It does suffer from grainy, hazy video and muffled, jumpy audio, but provides an interesting introduction to the history of the war in the Pacific. It is rather simplistic in its review of the causes of Japanese aggression in this theatre and tends to play down the mistakes and deficiencies of American and British diplomacy and poor strategic planning in the area, but provides an introduction to the subject, which may well encourage you to do a bit more research on your own behalf. It does bring home the horrors of the war in the Pacific and how different cultures will and do deal with the reality of 'total war'.

Many of the video clips have been used in later documentaries, which have gone to the trouble of some level of digital restoration of the original video and audio, so you may find some of the clips familiar. The narration is a bit 'stilted' and almost officious and condescending at times, but this is just a product of the time it was produced.

Overall, I found it to be a decent if sparse précis of the Pacific conflict, but do try to find it at a sensible price (I paid £8 for the whole double boxed set via the Works outlet). There are far better quality documentaries available, but this is informative, being produced so close to the end of the conflict. Bear in mind that this is an American production and therefore focusses predominantly on the U.S perspective, although British and Australasian actions are covered (if briefly).
