Although there have been many before it, Tallahassee is the first Mountain Goats album to receive a full British release. Suitably, it's the perfect introduction to this fascinating band. Essentially, the Mountain Goats are just a single mountain goat, one John Darnielle--an eloquent Iowa-based songwriter dabbling in the arts of sparse home-recording, minimal folk and grimly amusing storytelling. Like Smog's Bill Callahan, there's something engagingly idiosyncratic to Darnielle--his strong yet reedy voice, his delicious phrasing, his permanently arched eyebrow--but unlike Callahan, Darnielle takes pains to ensure his songs are bright and accessible, even as they hang heavy with tragedy and pathos. There's a theme, of sorts: an embittered married couple tire of life, set down roots in Tallahassee and decide to drink themselves to death. But Darnielle explodes this morbid premise into a sparkling, vivid treatise on the modern relationship: "Our conversations are like minefields," he quips on "Southwood Plantation Road". "No-one's found a safe way through one yet." The instrumentation is minimal--only a handful of songs consist of anything more than acoustic guitar and electric bass, with only "See America Right" and "Oceanographer's Choice" accompanied by drums. But this modesty suits the Mountain Goats, giving the lyrics top billing and letting the narrative unfold in all its ugly beauty. --Louis Pattison
