Her ability to express her feelings, convey her desires, and discuss both personal and spiritual matters indicates a depth of character and a strong emotional bond to her loved ones. This third volume covers the first ten years on Nicholas II's reign, exploring Alexandra's relationship with her mother-in-law, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, as well as her close friendship with her sisters-in-law Xenia and Olga Alexandrovna. During this time, Alexandra gave birth to 5 children, but after 4 girls, and no heir, people began sending her letters about how to conceive a male child. She and Nicholas also became involved with a French mystic, Monsieur Philippe, much to the alarm of some of her relatives. In 1904, Russia entered a disastrous war with Japan. The letters in this book give an intimate insight to Alexandra's mindset and growth in her role as well as her understanding of the events and people around her.
