Several of the songs were initiated by McKennitt some time ago. Others have been progressively taking shape in the midst of more recent projects and journeys. A few draw on the poetry of John Keats and W.B. Yeats, while another evokes a distinct Middle Eastern flavour. Wydany na 180-gramowym winylu nowy album kanadyjskiej artystki jest pierwszym, jaki ukazał się od czasu "An Ancient Muse" wydanego w 2006r. Wyprodukowany przez samą McKennitt "Lost Souls" to eklektyczny zbiór utworów, w których pobrzmiewają różnorakie wpływy, w tym celtyckie i bliskowschodnie, do których od dawna przyzwyczaiła swoich fanów.

"Przez ostatnie dziesięć lat w moim życiu wiele się działo, zarówno od strony zawodowej, jak i osobistej", wyznała Loreena. "Sporo też koncertowaliśmy. Z radością więc wróciłam do spokojniejszego twórczego procesu".

"Inspiracji do napisania utworu tytułowego dostarczyła mi książka Ronalda Wrighta "A Short History of Progress" ("Krótka historia rozwoju"), w której autor sugeruje, że porzuciliśmy nasz moralny kompas na rzecz rozwoju i staliśmy się "zagubionymi duszami".
