This is not the world's first set of rules for 3D Chess. It's not the second. In fact, in researching this subject, I discovered at least thirty unique sets of rules for 3D Chess. This leads to an obvious question: why do we need one more? Variety is the spice of life, but the reason for this particular rule-set is actually much more pragmatic: to my investigation of the subject, none of the existing rule-sets for 3D Chess preserve the unique spatial and strategic concepts of traditional two dimensional chess into the third dimension, maintain the movements of all pieces across the plane, and are easily playable on commercially available 3D Chess boards. This rule-set seeks to maintain all three of these needs. One aspect of this rule-set is that it can be extended to add as many levels as the players are willing and able. If you were to play single level 3D Chess, you would just be playing classic, two dimensional chess. It's once you add the additional levels that things get interesting.
