Описание

As already noted in the Spanish edition, listeners abroad often perceive this kind of club-oriented music differently from how we Italians do. We tend to see the phenomenon as dominant within its field, perhaps because we feel a certain pride in what happened during those years. Many producers managed to reinvent themselves, turning into modern-day King Midas figures and proving that even the most basic material could be shaped into something golden. From the previous edition onward, we added new and more substantial material, hoping to reach readers from every corner of the world. Some chapters, some artists, and certain circumstances may seem distant from the classic Italo-disco framework, yet outside Italy the boundaries of the genre appear far less defined. Much of the dance music produced in Italy between the 1970s and 1980s is not automatically classified under the label examined here. From the outset, the author tried to draw connections with earlier events, especially with the first Italian attempts at disco music, in order to offer plausible explanations for the sudden explosion of a phenomenon that, abroad, might have seemed to appear out of nowhere.Italo-disco includes a vast constellation of minor artists, curious oneoffs, fleeting meteors, and an endless parade of imaginative names that vanished from memory and survive only among collectors, fans, and specialists. In many countries there is a stronger historical awareness of the “subjects” and “objects” associated with the Italo-disco label than in Italy itself, where for many years we almost felt embarrassed to acknowledge our role in creating and exporting this movement.Even so, a few anchor points can be set. Within the phenomenon, at least four clearly defined stylistic lines emerge, shaped by the personal approaches of different producers. The Turatti–Chieregato model, though original, drew openly from the expressive English and German neo-romantic sound: echoes of Alphaville and Yazoo are unmistakable in their catalogue, built on chords, melodies, and rhythms that pull the listener straight onto the dance floor. The sonic alchemy of Pier Luigi Giombini and Paul Mazzolini (Gazebo) followed more emotional trajectories, closer to British new wave and melodic pop, often marked by slower BPM. Farina and Crivellente leaned toward experimentation and the search for new textures; their commercial results may not have matched expectations, yet they still enjoy a devoted following. The Martinelli–Zanini partnership produced immediate successes and shaped a less orthodox style, enriched by symphonic and classical suggestions of remarkable craftsmanship, though dispersed across too many projects that were not always coherent. At the opposite end, it is difficult to find any real unity in the many productions associated with Claudio Cecchetto. It is hard to draw parallels between Sandy Marton and Via Verdi, or between Sabrina Salerno and Taffy. Well-made as they are, the Cecchetto releases form a conceptually uneven catalogue, driven more by radio programming needs than by a coherent vision for the dance floor. The artists mentioned above share no real overlap; the aim was simply to craft Italian pop-dance tracks that could stand alongside British or American hits. For further insight, we can turn to Kimmo Salò, owner of Flashback Records: “I prefer when a track sounds ‘Italian’. To me, the term ‘Italo-disco’ means ‘Italian disco music from the 80s’. As a sound, it is very different from 80s Eurodisco. For a track to be truly Italo-disco, it must have a strong melody, a catchy chorus, and above all, a meaningful chord progression.”
