Katharine Hillard was a significant background force in the second and third decades of the Theosophical Society, which was founded in 1875. She became a member in 1888, though she was a Theosophist long before that. The Secret Doctrine was H. P. Blavatsky’s masterwork — an introduction to a portion of the Stanzas of The Book of Dzyan , an archaic text from which several ancient works were derived. From it, many writers produced explanations of aspects of its teachings, chief among them G. de Purucker, whose works may be found free online and in print at theosociety.org.Katharine Hillard (10 March 1839 – 3 November 1915) clearly labored diligently on this volume — reading, absorbing, culling, editing, rearranging, and polishing the text — until it became what it is: an abridgment of The Secret Doctrine by Helena P. Blavatsky. An abridgment is a shortened version of a book that preserves the main ideas and lines of reasoning while removing extensive detail, examples, and ancillary explanatory material, with the aim of making the work more accessible without altering its essential meaning.As Hillard herself notes in her Preface to the 1907 edition, many changes were made. That edition appears not to have been fully proofread after typesetting, and its inconsistencies suggest the involvement of multiple compositors. Since the original work had already been modified, rearranged, and in some cases reworded — including changes within quoted material — what has been done here should not be regarded as any greater departure from the original than Hillard’s own version. No meanings have been altered; changes to spelling and form were made only to clarify and standardize the text according to present conventions.This abridgment is intended as a stand-alone work and as an introduction or primer to The Secret Doctrine . It was not checked line-by-line against The Secret Doctrine for accuracy, As Katharine made countless changes in the original abridgment. Quotations and citations herein were not all verified, and original sources should always be checked. Readers wishing to quote passages should always consult the original work and use it when authorship is to be credited to H. P. Blavatsky. Errors may remain, as is inevitable in a work of this scope.
