In the height of the colonial era, ten-year-old Otonglo is violently abducted from his East African village and forced into domestic servitude in the West, where his captors attempt to erase his identity by renaming him Pablo. After six years of secret lessons and a profound bond formed with the District Commissioner’s daughter, Mitchelle, the two embark on a daring journey back to Africa, only for Otonglo to be recaptured in chains at his father's compound. He is brought back to stand before a public tribunal where he is charged with kidnapping and sentenced to death by hanging. This execution is only delayed when Mitchelle publicly and falsely claims to be carrying his child, creating a distraction that allows for a second, midnight escape. Slipping out of a window to meet Mitchelle at their secret garden well, the pair flees to a distant coastal town to build a life of their own, eventually returning to the Ramogi land as equals to raise their son, Young Pablo, and teach a new generation that the world is wider than those who try to shrink it.
