The Spanish government subsequently seized control of the island's natural resources and enslaved the Taíno Indians. Following colonization, a plan was developed to construct a fort and a lighthouse to safeguard the island. The lighthouses were strategically positioned to assist in maritime navigation and to defend against potential invaders.
