Conflict Under Constraint presents a wargame about the Australian Frontier Wars that refuses easy answers. Instead of decisive battles and clear victories, it models conflict as a condition shaped by Country, uncertainty, and accumulating pressure. Movement is never just movement, combat rarely resolves anything, and control is always partial. At its core, the system focuses on the “soft” dimensions of conflict: perception, cohesion, hesitation, and the constant strain of operating in an environment that is not neutral. Indigenous and colonial forces do not mirror one another. They move, see, and act under different conditions, creating an asymmetry that cannot be balanced, only understood. Designed for both players and educators, this work offers a framework for exploring the Australian frontier wars through scenario-based play, campaign continuity, and careful reflection. It challenges conventional wargaming assumptions and invites participants to consider how decisions are made under constraint, how pressure shapes outcomes, and how conflict unfolds over time rather than in moments of resolution. This is not a game about winning. It is a system for understanding how control is tested, how it fails, and what remains.
