Описание
The Nature of Wealth proposes a new analytical paradigm in economics. Its central claim is that the true source of wealth is not any single factor—such as labor, capital, or technology—but the value increment generated by cooperation among multiple agents. By taking cooperation as a first principle, the book reconstructs value theory, exchange theory, pricing theory, and market theory.Traditional economics typically starts from “production,” treating labor, capital, or technology as the primary drivers of wealth. However, this production-centered perspective overlooks a more fundamental reality: production does not occur in isolation—it is embedded in division of labor and cooperative structures. Without cooperation, there is no specialization; without specialization, there is no efficiency gain; and without efficiency, sustained wealth growth is impossible. Therefore, what truly determines economic performance is not individual factors, but the structure of cooperation among them. The book demonstrates this through a minimalist “Primitive Cooperation Model” (PCM). It shows that even when resources, labor, and time remain unchanged, total output can increase significantly through division of labor and cooperation alone. This leads to a key conclusion: value is not “created” in isolation, but “amplified” through cooperation. The additional output generated by cooperation constitutes the essence of wealth growth.Building on this, the book argues that exchange is not the source of value, but the mechanism through which value is realized. All voluntary exchanges occur because both parties expect to gain higher subjective value; therefore, exchange is inherently a positive-sum process rather than a zero-sum game. This directly challenges the notion that exchange necessarily involves exploitation. The book also redefines the nature of the market: rather than merely a place for transactions, the market is a self-organizing system for coordinating cooperation. Within this system, prices represent competitive expressions of cooperation conditions, competition serves to optimize cooperative arrangements, and firms function as institutional organizers of cooperation that reduce transaction costs. The primary function of the market is not simply to facilitate transactions, but to match the most efficient forms of cooperation.Using “cooperation structure” as its central variable, the book offers unified explanations for major economic phenomena: economic growth arises from the expansion of cooperation and deeper specialization; poverty results from exclusion from effective cooperation networks; firms are coordinators of cooperation rather than instruments of exploitation; and globalization represents the global expansion of cooperative networks. In conclusion, The Nature of Wealth presents a powerful and concise insight: economics is fundamentally the study of how cooperation structures are formed, expanded, and optimized. The broader the scope of cooperation, the deeper the division of labor, and the more efficient the exchange, the greater the wealth and prosperity.More than an economic theory, this book offers a new civilizational perspective: human progress is not driven by the struggle over resources, but by the continuous expansion and deepening of cooperation.
