There, the Wiradjuri people, once the largest Aboriginal tribe, faced devastating genocide that wiped out more than two-thirds of their population. By 1901, the Aboriginal population had been reduced to a fraction—just 10%—of its original strength. Colonial authority tightened its grip, unchallenged, until the Gold Rush of 1851 shattered the old order. This surge of migration and wealth transformed the nation’s landscape, dismantling authoritarian rule and reshaping society. It left behind grand monuments of prosperity and stability, but also deep scars: lingering racial tensions, resistance to authority, and environmental damage that persist to this day.
