A student told me nothing happens. He said it the way you explain something obvious to someone who seems confused. He was thirteen years old. He was completely right. I have been teaching Spanish for thirty years. I have stood in a barn in West Michigan teaching English to migrant farmworkers after twelve-hour days in the fields, because that was where they were, and so that was where I went. I have bought hundreds of notebooks out of my own pocket. I have enforced a password at the door every single day, in every school, in every state, because you do not get to walk past me without doing the thing. I walked away from teaching once. I came back. The honest reason is in this book. Still at the Door is not a complaint. It is not a policy manifesto. It is not written against students. It is a reckoning with what we have done, slowly and quietly and with genuinely good intentions, to the conditions that make real learning possible. To the tardy policy that does not begin until tardy number sixty. To the grades that no longer represent what a student actually knows. To the administrators trapped inside systems that have made accountability nearly impossible. To the teachers who are still there in body but ran out of room years ago.
