This book is full of photos and tales about the life and adventures of Thomas David Roberts. In 1966 Tom and his family piled into the Plymouth Valiant, made the epic trip up the wild, unpaved Alcan Highway with Jo’s brother David Baker, all their belongings packed into two cars. They arrived in Fairbanks via South Cushman, and Tom often told of how his first impression of Fairbanks was seeing a gun turret on top of a bar. Tom instantly felt at home. He once said, “I stayed because Fairbanks was the first place I lived where I felt like I was the sane one.” As head of the Physics and Electrical Engineering Departments, Tom soon strengthened the scientific influence and reputation of the University of Alaska.
