On the Twenty-Ninth of November is Zhou’s first full-length novel. Through dense, impressionistic prose, she describes a single day in the life of Matilda Rosen, a young graduate living in Vancouver who struggles with loneliness, deals with tragic reflections over the human condition, and seeks to uncover a greater purpose of her life through writing. The experimental structure of the novel, which begins when the character wakes up and ends when she falls asleep, paves the way for an era following postmodern literature in which the human condition is more deeply explored through elements of alienation and absurdity characterizing early twentieth-century Western society.
