Описание

The present compendium of Volume I assembles 1,231 architecturally significant structures from the ancient and medieval periods, defined here as the chronological span between approximately 3500 BCE and 1500 CE. The selection criteria privilege architectural-historical significance: structures are included on the basis of their innovation in structural typology, formal codification of subsequent traditions, scale relative to contemporaneous works, refinement of construction technique, integration with monumental ornamental programmes, or canonical status within the historiography of their respective regional tradition. Inclusion of UNESCO World Heritage status is indicated where applicable; nomination to the tentative lists of state parties is similarly noted. The compendium is organised into thirteen regional tables, each preceded by a brief contextual introduction. The thirteen categories are: Mesopotamia, Persia, Anatolia, and the Levant; Ancient Egypt and Nubia; Ancient Greece and the Hellenistic world; Ancient Rome and the Roman Empire; the Byzantine Empire and the Orthodox Christian East; Medieval Europe; the Islamic world; the Indian subcontinent and the Himalayas; East Asia; Southeast Asia; the Pre-Columbian Americas; Africa beyond Egypt; and a residual category encompassing megalithic Europe, Anatolian prehistoric sanctuaries, Central Asian palatial sites, the Pacific, the Phoenician-Punic, Iron Age European, Norse-Viking, and early Christian Irish traditions. Each entry within the regional tables is rendered with eleven attributes: a continuous serial number; the conventional name of the structure; the location given as locality and modern political jurisdiction; the architect, patron, or cultural authorship; the year or period of completion; the architectural style or cultural-stylistic designation; the structural-functional typology; the UNESCO World Heritage or comparable heritage status; an indication of scale or principal dimensions; a brief notation of notable design features; and the principal construction materials. Throughout the compilation, the conventions of formal scholarly British English are observed: dates are rendered in the BCE/CE designation rather than BC/AD, numerics are presented as digits, and the third-person register is maintained. The compendium does not purport to constitute an exhaustive catalogue; the architectural patrimony of the period under consideration substantially exceeds any thousand-entry register. The entries are however intended to be representative of the principal traditions, typologies, and innovations of each regional school, and to facilitate comparative reference across the global architectural heritage of the ancient and medieval epochs. The next 10 volumes (Volume II) contain detailed architectural images and diagrams on various aspects like Architectural plans & elevations, Geometric & ornamental reconstructions, Quantitative & comparative visualisations, Technical engineering analyses.
