ДОМ МЕЧТАНИЙ АННЫ

Anne Shirley is finally marrying Gilbert Blythe. Their first home together is a little white house by the sea on Prince Edward Island. And the fifth book in the Anne series is the warmest, the most quietly beautiful, and the most unexpectedly heartbreaking. After the years of Green Gables, Avonlea school, and Redmond College, Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe are married at last — and the House of Dreams, their small white cottage at Four Winds Harbour on the Gulf shore, is everything Anne's imagination ever promised her: sea winds, moonlit water, a garden, a little gate, and all the domestic happiness she has waited for through four volumes of longing. Into this idyll comes a community of people who will mark Anne's early married life as deeply as any she has known: Captain Jim, the old lighthouse keeper whose life-stories are a novel in themselves; Miss Cornelia, who maintains a running and entirely affectionate commentary on the shortcomings of the male sex; and Leslie Moore — beautiful, tragic, bound by a duty of care to a husband destroyed by accident, and possessed of a pride and a grief and a capacity for friendship that Anne has never encountered before. Montgomery wrote Anne's House of Dreams in 1917, and it is a book written in the shadow of the First World War — her own journals from this period make clear the grief that underlies the novel's more painful passages, and the book's central tragedy has a weight and a seriousness that distinguishes it from the earlier Anne volumes. But the House of Dreams itself — the sea light, the garden, the community of Four Winds, the warmth of Anne and Gilbert's early married happiness — is rendered with such loving precision and such genuine joy that the novel remains one of the most beautiful in the series.
