Описание
Alexander Hay was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1820. At the age of 18 he emigrated to South Australia on the Planter and began his new life working on the wharves for the South Australian Company. He then briefly ran a Hardware shop in North Adelaide before taking up the position of shepherd on a farm at Chain of Ponds, near Gumeracha. Shortly after his marriage in 1845 he moved back to the city and established a successful grocery and hardware store in Rundle Street. His business flourished and by the mid 1850s he had become a wealthy man, shrewdly investing in property. He became highly regarded in the community and took on a number of company directorships, further elevating his public identity. Enticed to enter politics for Gumeracha in 1857, becoming part of the State's first responsible Government. He served as a politician for a total of 23 years before retiring in 1890. He is specifically remembered for building his gracious home 'Linden' at Beaumont and the palatial Mount Breckan mansion at Victor Harbor, which was his summer residence.
